Welcome from the Co-Chairmen

I would like to extend my warmest greetings to all participants, organisers and guests of the Kyiv Festival 2005. This year its leitmotif is "Ukraine - Europe" which could not be more up-to-date these days! In the short period since the last Festival the country has lived through truly historical transformations, and the artists were the ones who stood at the very front creating the new face of Ukraine.

I am very happy to say that in spite of its very young age the Festival has already become an important national event, attracting more and more artists and fans from all over the world. Also I can only welcome the intensified educational element within the Festival due to a unique for our country Week of Co-operation between the two prestigious European academies: the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and the National Music Academy of Ukraine.

Finally, may I wish you the greatest of successes in all the events of this Festival and also to keep for as long as possible the elated feeling of spring and warmth that the high art creates.

Oksana Bilozir

co-chairman

Minister for Culture and Arts of Ukraine

I am delighted, once again, to be associated with the Kyiv Festival. Last year, when it started, it created an important platform for one of Britain's greatest composers and saw the performance of Benjamin Britten's major works. This year the Festival is even bigger and better which bodes well for its future.

In 2004, and in parallel with this Festival, Goodenough College organised the Benjamin Britten International Violin Competition in London and it was exciting to have five young Ukrainian violinists competing. One of them, Makym Brylinski, won second prize and the Silver Medal.

I am delighted that Mrs Oksana Bilozir, your new Minister for Culture and Arts, has joined me as Co-Chairman of your Festival. Music needs the help of governments if it is to create exciting events such as those produced by this Festival. It is good to see recognition of this fact by her appointment.

Finally, I should like to thank all those who, through hard work and dedication, have produced another outstanding Festival. They should be proud of what they have created in Kyiv.
