I
am delighted, once again, to be associated with
the Kyiv Festival. Last year, when it started, it
created an important platform for one of Britain's
greatest composers and saw the performance of Benjamin
Britten's major works. This year the Festival is
even bigger and better which bodes well for its
future.
In
2004, and in parallel with this Festival, Goodenough
College organised the Benjamin Britten International
Violin Competition in London and it was exciting
to have five young Ukrainian violinists competing.
One of them, Makym Brylinski, won second prize and
the Silver Medal.
I
am delighted that Mrs Oksana Bilozir, your new Minister
for Culture and Arts, has joined me as Co-Chairman
of your Festival. Music needs the help of governments
if it is to create exciting events such as those
produced by this Festival. It is good to see recognition
of this fact by her appointment.
Finally,
I should like to thank all those who, through hard
work and dedication, have produced another outstanding
Festival. They should be proud of what they have
created in Kyiv.
