Vasyl Vovkun, a distinguished Ukrainian producer and scriptwriter, was born in Lviv region and graduated from Kyiv State Institute of Theatrical Arts. From 1981 he performed on stage of the Chernivtsi Theatre of Music and Drama and, from 1989 until 1994, at the Kyiv studio-theatre “Budmo!”. In 1994-2004 he was production director of the Ukrainian State Centre of the Cultural Initiatives during which time he directed hundreds of state productions of various genres. He is currently the Artistic Director of the Production Workshop “Artistic Agency Art Veles” (from 1995), member of the Advisory Board ot the Ukraine 3000 Fund chaired by the First Lady of Ukraine and, from 2003, he is the General Producer of the Kyiv Festival.

Vasyl Vovkun has directed several hundreds of high-profile theatrical productions, state celebrations, international festivals including the Kyiv Britten Festival 2004 when he staged Britten’s War Requiem, Ukrainian Art decades in Slovakia, Poland, France, Germany, Belarus, mass events, alternative concerts, original shows amongst the most famous of which was the dazzling performance of Stravinsky’s opera Oedipus Rex on Kyiv’s Independence Square. In 2005 jointly with the British director Stephen Medcalf he directed the performance of Britten's Turn of the Screw for the Kyiv Festival 2005, for the same festival he also directed Verdi's Ballo di Maschera at the Lviv Opera.
